State and District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums meet, take stock

GANGTOK, 27 July [IPR]:  Conference of the president and members of State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission and the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum was held in the Conference Hall of the High Court of Sikkim, Gangtok on Saturday.
Judge High Court of Sikkim, Justice SP Wangdi, who is also the president of the Sikkim State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SSCDRC), chaired the conference. Presidents of all the District Consumer Redressal Forums were also present during the conference. Secretary of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, DP Sharma was the special invitee along with Additional Chief Engineer, Buildings & Housing Department, Kuldip Chettri.
Justice SP Wangdi set the conference in motion followed by the introduction of the members of the Commission. The president of SSCDRC Justice Wangdi while giving emphasis on the programme requested the members to actively involve themselves in the awareness programme in order to disseminate the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act to the people. He stated that the objective of the forum is to give relief to the public who are deprived of their rights and ensure that justice is given to them.
He also highlighted the need for sensitization programmes to be held in all administrative levels like the SDM, BDO, Police and even at the Panchayat level so that the consumers are made aware of their rights. He also felt the need for the law department to work in collaboration with the Consumer Department to bring about effective awareness.
Justice Wangdi stressed on consumer awareness programmes to focus on remote corners of the state. He also congratulated the Consumer department for making the price regulatory module. He stated that awareness programmes in the form of drama and animation were in progress to make the public more aware and to educate them on consumer protection and their rights.
The Secretary Food & Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs informed the house that they have been conducting awareness programmes throughout the state and have plans to intensify the awareness campaigns for the benefit of the consumers. He also informed that the Standard Testing laboratory is necessary in the state for proper verification of POL products and other consumer related items.
DP Sharma also informed the house that the State Modular System has been launched which fixes the price of basic consumer products and thus helps in checking the price rates of various products in the state. Even a new SMS system has been launched for LPG where the customer can acquire an LPG cylinder refill within two days and thus save time.
