EIILM withdraws request for Govt takeover, calls interviews to fill VC and Registrar vacancies

The Eastern Institute for Integrated Learning in Management [EIILM], the private university which has remained consistently in the news for all the wrong reasons of late, has, in a dramatic turn of events, withdrawn the representation made to the State government urging it to take over the University. Following this is the publication of advertisements calling applicants for a ‘Walk-in Interview’ for the post of Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the University.
EIILM’s promoters, it may be recalled, had urged the State Government to take over the university after an Enforcement Directorate investigation had left all its bank accounts frozen and properties outside Sikkim attached. Clear information refused to come from the management and the university remains shut down, imperiling the future of some 250 students enrolled at its Malbasey campus in West Sikkim.
One of the trustees of Malvika Foundation which has floated EIILM, RP Sharma, who is currently the acting Vice Chancellor of the University, did not respond to phone calls made by this correspondent to comment on the latest development.
Mr. Sharma, on behalf of the University and its sponsoring body, had sent a representation to the Chief Minister on 01 January, 2015 appealing for “accession” of the university by the Government of Sikkim. The five-page letter had detailed that the university’s nine bank accounts operated from within and outside Sikkim with deposits to the tune of Rs. 1.52 crores, were attached by the Enforcement Directorate on 18 October 2014 along with all the acquired immovable properties outside Sikkim.
Director, Higher Education in the state government, Jitendra Raje, when contacted for an update on the EIILM issue, said that the department has already decided to hold examinations at the university and will announce the schedule for the examination within the next two or three days. Students at EIILM, it may be recalled had launched a protest midway through their exams in December 2014 demanding answers about the fate of their education there. Only assurances arrived with no clear commitments and the students continue to remain in limbo.
The state government has assured the Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh embassies that students from their countries studying in Sikkim will be accommodated in other colleges within and outside the State from the next academic session which begins in a few months time, adding that such colleges and universities are in touch with the state Directorate of Higher Education.
When asked about the latest move of the EIILM university calling for recruitment of Vice Chancellor and Registrar, Mr Raje said that the department was also caught by surprise. The department is keeping close watch on the activities of the university, he added.
Meanwhile, sources in the High Court of Sikkim inform that the writ petition urging the court to direct the State Government and the Directorate of Higher Education to take over EIILM university has not yet been withdrawn nor have they moved any application for withdrawing the writ petition. The university’s promoters had filed a writ petition in the High Court in the first week of January seeking court directions to the State Government to take over the university.
Malvika Foundation, located on the Delhi-Mathura Road, is the sponsoring body of EIILM. The EIILM university has been offering degree courses in Engineering [B.Tech], Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Computer Application, Master of Science, Master of Business Administration from its campus.  At present, there are 250 students studying in various courses in different semesters, 27 teaching faculty members and 33 non-teaching employees.
